Monday Morning

This morning I was awakened by the scream of my mom being beat by my dad. This is the occasional noise I hear either in the morning or the night. It was harsh and I was frightened to go downstairs for breakfast. I got out of my bed at 6:30 a.m. and hopped in my shower. When I got out I heard a shriek from my dog that was barking at my dad. When I put on my Jordan’s I knew that downstairs would be a place where I needed to get my breakfast bagel and get out of that house immediately. When I went downstairs I saw my dad cleaning something off the floor, which happened to be my mom’s blood. I looked at it and it made me loose my appetite so I ran out of the house to catch the 7:00 a.m. school bus that had nobody on it except me and the bus driver. I had previously asked the bus driver to pick me up first so I could have some time to myself before the seniors got on the bus who picked on me 24/7. However this morning the seniors did not get on the bus because it was Monday and they would probably be late to school. I was very happy because today I had an art test that I needed to study for and I was able to on the bus without being called names because I am black. When I arrived at Merryweather High School, I walked in to my locker and was immediately stopped by a senior that always picked on me in school and at basketball practice. When the first bell rang I rushed to art to get the best seat to get ready for the test. After studying, I knew that I was going to ace the test. Mr. Freeman walked in to the class and said, “Who is ready to fail?” I thought that my life was over because if I failed this test then I could not play in the big rivalry game on Wednesday.

Monday Afternoon

After lunch today all of the high school cliques had their typical Monday meetings on what they were going to do to people. There are the jocks who are the guys that pick on people the most and they all play football. There are the popular girls who are stuck-up and are bitches to everyone. The nerds that talk about the new digital computer that will send the world on it’s side, and the losers, which includes me that are picked on and are beat up by the jocks. On my way to Hairwoman’s class, Carter who was the quarterback and the star of the team and was going to Georgia on a scholarship attacked me. He took me in to the bathroom for a swirly. Carter always picks on me and I hate it but I guess when your 6ft 5 and can bench 500lbs you can have some room to talk. When I got to Hairwoman’s class 10 minutes late, she still hadn’t called my name for attendance because she takes 20 minutes because she doesn’t show her face. English is my favorite class because in my family my mom majored in college for English and is an English teacher and she helps me with my homework. Hairwoman’s class is so boring but the material is easy to understand. I am always the only person that stays awake because I want to go to college and I need to work hard. All of the other kids in the class fall asleep but the teacher doesn’t notice because she never looks up. When the bell rang for class to be over, I ran out so I could quickly change so the jocks wouldn’t mess with me. My basketball coach is a father figure to me because my father is abusive and I can look for help from coach. Today is the day that we prepared for the game because we did not have practice tomorrow because coach had to go to a conference.

Tuesday Morning

Today when I woke up I was very excited because I knew the biggest game of our season was today. This was a huge game for me because I knew that there were going to be a lot of college scouts at the game and I need a scholarship because my parents cannot afford to send me to college my future was riding on this game but first I had to get through another day of school. As I walked into the school I remembered that today we were having a huge pep-rally for the game and the pep-rally came during art I was so excited to miss art because it is boring dumb and I just don’t like it. As the clock slowly ticked towards 10:15 I began to get excited because I got to stand in front of the whole school and it made me happy that for once people would be cheering for me and not just the seniors. At 10:15 the pep-rally began and everyone got their seats the band was playing music and the crowd was going crazy as the team walked out onto the gym floor to be greeted by the crowd and the teachers and faculty I had a good feeling that we were going to win.

Tuesday Afternoon

The game was tomorrow I was so excited I was getting pumped and not paying attention to anything I was only thinking about the game. Nothing else I was being treated like a superstar it was amazing knowing that they would be treating me like this for two days. Since we did not have practice today I went to the local gym to work out it was a great work out I lifted weights for about half an hour the I shoot around with my teammates Jamal, Joe, Dwight and Nate. We were so ready for the big game tomorrow. I had them over for dinner and we watched tapes of Springfield Highs team they looked ok but I knew we were going to win because you can see they have no outside shooting and there centers cannot even make easy layups.

Wednesday Morning

This morning surprisingly I was not awakened by my dad beating my mom. He did not beat her today. It was a good feeling. I sprung out of my bed and was really jolly because today was the day that I could prove myself to coach in the game because he told me that I was starting. I was so excited that I skipped a shower and ran downstairs for my great pancake and bacon breakfast prepared by my mom. The bus came late today because the bus driver had to get gas. Once again, I was the first on the bus. All of the seniors did not pick on me today because it was game day and me being the captain I had a certain type of respect on game days. They applauded me when I walked in to the school and made a pathway to my locker. Being a freshman and a new captain this was a very new experience for me. My first class was English and Hairwoman was absent today so it was more fun. I was bored today so I wrote down the top ten lies that the previous freshman class had told me about high school.

1. Teachers are always up beat and excited.

2. The basketball team sucks

3. Freshman do not play on Varsity

4. Homework is not necessary

5. Bullying is not tolerated

6. The football team is nice to students

7. Your locker is a private place

8. High school is the best time of your life

9. Your teachers check homework

10. The school is the safest place to be

Wednesday Afternoon

Today for lunch Carter bought me lunch because I had a game. I was surprised that he did but I was thankful. Today I was treated like a superstar, like Lebron James walking through a crowd of people. But back to my day, I was going to my final class. I had art and I was psyched because Mr. Freeman was excited to watch the game and he kept asking me questions about how we would compare to the other team. Also today we went over the test that we took. I got a 95% and I was so happy and I knew my mom would be so proud of me. She had confidence in me and I wanted to make her proud. This test gave me so much confidence for the game and I thought I was going to score 30 points. When I was let out of the class, I walked slowly to my locker and acting cool for the ladies. The bad thing was that I was living this for one day and I would get beat up tomorrow and any day that we did not have a game. However, I thought that it was kind of weird being a cool kid because I was not used to it. Anyway back to the game. In warm-ups I started to see people filing in the gym to witness history. After the buzzer went off, we ran to the locker room to get ready for the game. Coach said, “Whatever happens today, I love you guys and leave everything on the court.” I got so pumped and when we ran out on the court they played my favorite song by Jay-Z. Then we went to the bench and they called the starting line-ups. “At guard, a freshman Jeff Teague!”, and the whole gym roared! I scored 15 points, not as much as I expected but still a great game. I went home and had the best dinner ever.

Thursday Morning

As I arrived at school I knew it was going to be a normal day where the seniors bullied me and nothing was going to change. So I walked to my locker and on it was a note saying great game from all the senior girls I was excited and very shocked. At lunch all of the girls were hugging on me because I had a great game and with 15 points I lead the team in scoring and they were flirting with me it made me very happy. In art this really fine senior girl named Lashiqua Morset sat next to me it was amazing it was probably the best art class I have ever had.

Thursday Afternoon

This afternoon I only had two classes math and biology I have a 97 in both of those classes. I don’t really pay attention in those classes either because they are so easy so as I got to math I remembered that we had a test and I did not study for it but I knew I would do well because it was just on dividing fractions after I took it I knew I got at least a 95 on it. In biology we just used microscopes and looked at onion cells it was really boring I was day dreaming the whole class period as the final bell rang I was so glad to go home because I had no homework and it was almost the weekend.

Friday Morning

This morning, disappointingly, I was awakened by the beating of my mom from my dad. It was worse than Monday. I had to get out of bed and hop in the shower for the last day until the weekend. I got out of the shower dried myself off and went to my closet to get my Lebrons that helped me score 15 points on Wednesday. I ran quickly downstairs except this time I did not stop for a bagel I just walked out the door to catch the bus. At 7:00 a.m. we started to go to the kids houses that bullied me. I got nervous and believe it or not when they got on the bus they did not say a word to me. “Did the coach tell the principal? Or did something happen?” I don’t know but it seemed odd because it was not game day. Today my first class was art again with Mr. Freeman. Last time he was nice, but today he was cranky. I got scared because he told me in class yesterday to see the dean because he caught me copying down homework. However, I did not go. I did not want to get in trouble. My mom would find out then I don’t know how my dad wouldn’t and he would beat me. I got nervous until Mr. Freeman said, “Someone in my family passed away, that’s why I am sad today.” I then felt this huge sigh of relief. Throughout the class I kept drawing a tree. It seemed as if it had some particular significance to it that I loved. I showed the teacher but he declined to answer. His attitude pissed me off and that frustrated me because teachers are to care for their student but this guy is worrying about himself. I did not want him as a teacher so I asked the dean if I could transfer classes. They declined as well. Then I thought I should man up and take his criticism like a man.

Friday Afternoon

This afternoon I had my favorite class English I was paying attention to what hairwoman said because I loved English and wanted to make my mom proud that I like English just as much as she does my mom is one of my biggest motivators she helps me through everything unlike my dad who would not even pull me out of quick sand if was not in the best interest of him. As the last bell rang I quickly ran to my locker to get my jacket because it was cold and I was going to my friend Dwights house it was going to be fun we were going to play basketball and ping pong all night it is going to be so fun.
